As you may know I am an avid reader of the fishing comics as I want to gain as much knowledge as possible about this sport. Once you get through the crap (no I havn't misspelt is (see me in the shop if you don't get that one)) of using a certain manufacturers lead, line or hook there is some good information on a lot of articles BUT I do wonder about the best way to go for Pike scratch.

I could experiement but you lot insist that I open the shop all day every day to be here at your beck and call so I don't have the time. It seems that big fish are caught on both methods but does anyone have any views and which is the most productive Question

Put your views forward here for all to see and let's get into a few of those lovely pike Laughing

I personally don't mind either method and I've caught on both. I enjoy lures as you are constantly casting. retrieving and searching around for a take. However it's just nice to sit there sometimes with a deadbait taking in the surroundings while your waiting.

I suppose it all depends on your location as to what works better.

I also prefer lures because of the same reason. I know Steve Moore catch good fish on both but listening to him at the shop and from what dad tells me he prefers lures (he also does a bit for fishtec. A good lure manufacturer)

They both have their advantages, those new storm lures look the danglies, but i do enjoy deabaiting too.
The deadbaiting is good personally when the roach are in spawn and the pike are lurking in the reeds close to the margins waiting for the eggs and the potential roach to come past, whack deadbait in there and you're sure to get a lovely esox. But you can also wobble a deadbait, which makes use for a lure instead, and you get a nice scent trail with it too! Take lamprey for example, brilliant deadbait as they leak tons of juices for hours on end, imagine that trailing through the water on a uni rig, the pike love it.

Again, deadbaiting has it's advantages, as well as lure fishing, but a deadbait can be turned in to a lure too!

At the end of the day however, the best technique is the one that's catching the most fish on the water you're planning to fish, so it's always advisable to get in contact with the club who runs the water to see what methods are catching.

as with all fish they do mate, that's what the lateral line comes in handy for, sensing minute vibrations in the water from small fish in low light conditions! The big eyes on a pike and the 2 grooves running along the sides of its head act as a targeting device and when the fish is square inbetween that, the pike strikes at lightning speed. They generally dont eat the fish instantly, as their teeth are covered in an anti coagulant, the pike generally bites a fish and it then bleeds to death. Then the pike comes back for an easy meal Very Happy
